ARIS (The Association of the Robotic and Innovative Surgeons) is formally launched here today in Guwahati by Shri Chandra Mohan Patowary, Honourable Minister of Transport, Parliamentary Affairs, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Industries and Commerce in Government of Assam. The Hon Minister was joined by renowned Robotic Surgeon Dr. Subhash Khanna who has been unanimously elected as President and other founding members from all over India and abroad.

ARIS – the Association of Robotic & Innovative Surgeons is India’s Own First Robotic Surgeon’s Association. It is probably the first-ever international healthcare professional association to be headquartered in Guwahati. Guwahati and the north-east region will be on the world map as a healthcare destination. An historic moment as a European Association has expressed interest to collaborate, as we will agree that it is always been the other way round.

Robotic surgery is the new future of surgery world over, recent advances in equipment and surgical techniques have made minimally invasive surgery popular and one of the most effective techniques in several fields of surgery. It has several advantages over standard surgical approaches, including Rapid recover, Lower rate of post-operative infection, Decreased pain, Better postoperative immune function, Cosmetic results .

The Association will promote academic and scientific activities in the field of robotics, surgical skills and new and innovative methods and protocols. To encourage medical research in the field of Robotics surgical skills and new and innovative methods and protocols. Sharing of knowledge and skill will happen through  continuing medical education programs, training programs, Seminars, Symposiums, meetings, and conferences. The Association will publish scientific papers, Journals, Monographs and textbooks, aimed at upgrading knowledge and skill about robotics surgery.

Addressing the Media and more than 200 delegates Shri Chandra Mohan Patowary, Honourable Minister congratulated the founding members. He also said “We acknowledge the efforts and thank the founding members to have considered launching the society in Guwahati. There are many initiatives taken by the Assam Government to improve Healthcare Infrastructure and we are confident that Guwahati will be in the top 10 healthcare tourism destination in the country. We are also aware that our neighbouring states look up to Guwahati for advanced treatment including Robotics. This is one another proud moment for all of us and very pleased to know Dr. Khanna is the founding president and knowing him for many years, we are sure he will take this Association and the Robotic science to greater heights, ultimately improving the quality of care to our people.”

Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Director IIT and Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, V.C Cotton University were the other invited Guest of Honour apart from various other dignitaries. Both the dignitaries while speaking on the occasion expressed great pleasure as to how technology is defining the future of healthcare.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Subhash Khanna, President – ARIS said “India does have some of the world’s best Surgeons and Healthcare Professionals and it is time for the World to acknowledge the commendable surgeries, treatments, procedures and volume of work happening here in India. It is probably for the first time in the history that many international associations have expressed interest to collaborate with an Indian Association to train surgeons in Robotics. I am overwhelmed with the response from our colleagues and young surgeons in their interest in Robotics which we all know is the future of surgery.

Speaking to the media he said that there are only about around 100 surgical Robots in the country whereas Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Malaysia donot have any Robot. The members of those countries can also enroll as members in this society.

Speaking to the media , Dr Vivek Bindal, Secretary – ARIS said “We acknowledge the progressive initiatives in Healthcare by the Assam Government and thank the Hon. Minister to have taken time out to be here with us, reiterating the Government’s commitments for a better Health System to the people of Assam. We members of the EC feel welcomed and are motivated to celebrate many more such initiatives here in Assam and the North East.”

It is interesting to know that India is one of the top 3 countries performing the highest number of Robotic surgeries in the world.

The founding members’ are renowned surgeons representing leading corporate hospitals from different sub speciality and together have an experience of performing more than 5000 Robotic surgeries in India.

Robotics-assisted surgery has gained popularity in several surgical specialties globally, and many institutions are investing in medical robotic technology for applications in General surgery, Urological, Head and Neck, Gynaecological, and Neurological surgery. This new and exciting technology is shown and proven to have better or comparable outcomes and can be cost-effective in the long run when compared with conventional surgical approaches.

Recognizing the increasing need to consolidate the field and to promote awareness and continue educational research in the field of robotics, surgical skills, new and innovative methods and protocols, the founders had decided to establish the society, to facilitate the dispersal of this emerging field of surgical technology world over.

The Association’s first-ever conference will be held today and tomorrow at Radisson Blu Guwahati to commemorate the launch of the society. The conference has more than 200 delegates with some of the best speakers of international repute.
